My new Bosch dishwasher arrived two weeks ago. I've only used the automatic cycle so far for washing. It takes 2 hours and 15 minutes for this cycle; a bit less time if I do a half load. (Other cycles are normal and sanitize.) The rinse-only cycle takes 9 minutes. I've used it several times when I have too many dishes to wash in one load, or too few for a half load. Dishes come out of the rinse cycle looking very clean. (In fact, "only rinsed" dishes usually look better than hand washed items, thanks to the soft water and rinse aid.) The machine cleans really, really well. I don't need to waste energy or water to pre-rinse or scrub anything before loading it into the dishwasher. (This machine uses less than 4 gallons of water per load!) I use a cloth or paper towel to wipe off food particles before I wash. The filter traps anything left on the plates. The filter is right in front, easily visible, and one look tells you if you need to clean it. It takes less than a minute to remove it, rinse and replace it. This is great if you don't have an "electric pig" (aka garbage disposal) and/or don't want to send food debris into your septic system. I love the built-in water softener. (We don't have a softener in our house.) My dishes, especially glassware, look *so* much better now; no more cloudy film from years of hard water. I couldn't find the dishwasher salt in any grocery stores. I finally tracked down a box at a high end appliance store about 25 miles from home. FYI, the large crystals (salt) used in the softener looks similar to the stuff used in large home softeners. It's nothing like table salt. A rinse aid product will leave your dishes dry at the end of a cycle. If you don't want to use this, keep a towel handy when you open up your machine, because your dishes will be dripping wet. I guess you can't have a dry cycle and still get the Energy Star efficiency certification. The interior of the machine is stainless steel. Both racks are made of a heavy, sturdy plastic. (I like the plastic is better than steel--it can't possibly chip any dishes.) They roll in and out smoothly and easily. There are three (easily adjustable) height settings for the top rack, allowing changes depending on size of items in bottom or top rack. So far, everything fits in the machine, even the broiler pan from the oven. The top rack also has a sort of "lid" along the right side that folds down and holds items in place. This prevents Tupperware-type items from flipping over and filling with water during a cycle. I also use this area for large knives and anything else that is light enough to turn over. Both racks have pull-up tines that give you more options for loading dirty dishes. The cutlery basket in the lower rack can be moved almost anywhere in the rack. Now that the kick plate is installed correctly, this machine is very, very quiet. There is a red light that shines onto the floor and lets you know it is running. Overall, this is a great machine for small households. It's well-made and looks good, inside and out. I didn't think I could find a machine that would clean so well and still be energy and water efficient.
